The weather is warming up, announcing summer’s impending arrival. One of the most beloved activities of the season is spending a day at the pool with the family to relieve yourself of the heat in the cool water while playing some games, swimming, or just dipping your toes in the water. If you take your children to the pool, however, it is crucial to be aware of some safety precautions to ensure that your fun day at the pool does not involve any emergencies. Given that drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional death among children between the ages of 1 and 4, it is evident that pool safety is a major issue.

Follow these safety tips this summer before your day at the pool:

  • Supervision: Always make sure that your children are being supervised, either by you or a responsible guardian. Do not rely on lifeguards. Pools can be a crowded space and their job is to try to keep an eye on everyone. It is much easier to focus on your little one than it is for them. Even if there is another adult in the pool, you cannot assume that your children will be safe. Anything can happen and it only takes a moment.
  • Distractions Can Be Fatal: If you are supervising your children, never engage in other activities that might detract your attention away from them. It might be tempting to scroll through social media on your phone while they are in the pool, but taking your eyes off them can be a costly mistake.
  • Instructions Are Helpful: Give your children the tools they need to enjoy their day at the pool and arrange for them to have swimming lessons. Swimming lessons can be given for children as young as 6 months old, who are able to sit up on their own and have head and neck control. These classes also place an emphasis on the importance of requesting permission before getting into the water.
  • Proper Equipment: No one wants an accident to happen, but you should be prepared nonetheless. Keep a fiberglass shepherd’s crook, a life preserver, and always have a mobile phone with you in case you need to call for emergency assistance. Any number of these things can save a life.
  • Shade: We are often so concerned about risks a swimming pool might pose that we forget about the other hazards. Protect your children from sun exposure and try to keep them in the shaded areas of a pool, if possible. In this case, use sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher).

A day at the pool is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, but safety should never be neglected. Stay alert and engaged with your children. Joining them in the pool decreases the risks of any avoidable accidents, with the added bonus of being able to create memories you will cherish.
